It seems I have a similar problem, at least on an overview, launching
Civilization IV BTS, steam version. I managed to make a detailed debug.

Symptoms:
after download of the source-code version of wine 1.3.0-166-g277040d and
install the program (Civilization IV) stopped working with the same kind of
symptoms that seems to be happening with half-life.

To guarantee that the problem wasn't with some garbled registry, did
make uninstall
make clean
configure
sudo make install with the same code.

Reinstalled steam with a downloaded version, installed steam following
instructions recommended on the wiki for steam, and downloaded Civilization IV
BTS. Detailed execution log was obtained by changing the command line of the
civilization IV launcher:

env WINEPREFIX="/home/alexander/.wine" WINEDEBUG=+seh,+tid,+relay,+olerelay
wine 1>~/civ4bts.out 2>~/civ4bts.err winebrowser steam://rungameid/8800

The generated results are being annexed, and also the configurations.
