Ok, I have it working with stock Wine 1.2. For all the poor Ubuntu users like
me take a look at the following blog post:

Downside is - Wine does not work with OSS on this particular kernel and Alsa
plugin messes up regularly. So you're usual Wine sound issues.

I assume 2.6.35-14 in Ubuntu does not include everything that is in 2.6.35 -
which seems to happen quite a lot lately.
