I've had the same trouble with joysticks and wine. If indeed this problem is
OSX-wide and game-wide as it seems to be, then solving this would help a large
class of gamers play a large class of games through Wine. While I would love to
fix this, I am afraid I lack the necessary competency and as such I must rely
on the kindness of wine-devs. :)

I recognize that with such a complex entity evolving through disparate
donations of talent that features and bug-fixes must be prioritized. Hopefully
given the potential scope of effect this bug fix could have, someone with
talent and knowledge will read this and make fixing the joystick bug their
priority.
