To fan the flames a little bit more:
how does ALSA's pulse plugin work for you ?

For me, it seems to work just fine (WaveOut/DS) and I'm getting
MIDI sound through timidity then.
Even pulseaudio upstream agrees that alsa is
necessary for MIDI.

However, I wonder about that DirectMusic bit
- it doesn't seem to work at all, that is apps
don't produce any sound. Does it need an external 
app too ? Unless it's supported by the means of 
installing native DirectX - that would be quite dissatisfying.
