Unless I'm mistaken, upgrades won't re-install that package if it's removed
(there's probably no other package dependent on it as it's the meta for the
whole Ubuntu desktop environment).

Quite the opposite of it being re-installed: what will likely happen is that
you won't get any new packages that are added as a standard part of the desktop
in the new version... because they're only installed due to ubuntu-desktop's
dependency on them.  So, if the maintainers do something like change the
standard network manager - you'll mysteriously still be using the old one after
your dist-upgrade.

But I digress...

I use Kubuntu, without pulse.  I would still like to see it supported for the
people that need it in order to more easily manage their audio setup.

Until wine works on a system with pulse installed (and we can get rid of the
"REMOVE PULSEAUDIO" thread stickied at the top of the forums), I think this bug
is valid and needs to be addressed in *some* way (I won't pretend to know if
the best solution is OpenAl or winepulse).
