I am having serious issues with game sound in World Of Warcraft as well. I
have tried using both, the Win2000 and XP options. As I understand it, the
Win2k option uses the most understood API..but this still throws the sound
problems.

These are crackling, sounding like the sample is not playing smoothly, and
eventually the sound simply cuts out altogether. There can also be synchronous
game artefacts in frame rate lag. The cut-out also often happens in
synchronicity with other sound events such as keying up while using Mangler.
It sounds a bit like it is a resource management issue.

I run a fully updated 64bit Ubuntu 9.10 on a quad-core unit with 4gigs of ram,
and WINE 1.0.1 from the official repos.

Also, the sound issue occurs regardless if I am using the on-board sound proc,
or USB headphones, so I don't think this is related to hardware.

3 other people in my guild that have started using Ubuntu 9.10 also have major
sound issues. My wife and daughter both use fully updated Ubuntu 9.04(one uses
32bit and one uses 64bit) with WINE 1.0.1, and neither of them has any issues
with game sound.

I would therefore hazard a guess that it is a function of changes Canonical
made to Pulse for the 9.10 release.
