It looks like Valve might have sorted this.
Played for a number of hours this evening with no problems at all and the
intermittent stuttering which used to occur also seems to be completely gone.
This is a change from the game becoming unusable after 10-15 mins on average.
This apparent improvement seems to have coincided with a patch which was
released today:

Undocumented fix perhaps? Can anyone confirm or was I just very very lucky?
The improvement seems total however.
