I found a workaround for the missing sound:

I have downloaded the 32-bit version of libopenal and libopenal-dev, extracted
both manually, put all from /usr/lib into /usr/lib32, set a symbolic link from
libopenal.so.1 to libopenal.so (very important step!) in /usr/lib32, edited the
package information file openal.pkg (libdir=/usr/lib32) and configure was no
longer complaining about missing libopenal 32-bit development files. :-)

So let's hope this works...
