This regression is still present in wine-1.1.44-19-gd2a0188.

I know of another program showing similar problems: Creative Writer 2. The
commit mentioned here turned its file dialogs mostly black, and it has the same
workarounds as Adobe Reader 3. It requires Windows 95 or later, so using the
old colors for Windows 3.x mode wouldn't help it...
