Aha!

This was the culprit for me too, good call.  I disabled the
gameoverlayrenderer.dll for hl2 and there we go, no more weird crashing.
I have used winetricks as well before, so perhaps that is what made it such an
elusive thing to notice.

Thank you for mentioning it here!  When I first searched all over for this, it
was before your post on the forum, I think, and I guess I did not search again
lately.  ;^^
