By setting up port forwarding in my nat/router/firewall box
per

I did finally get remote connections to go above zero,
and "download speed" is now at a megabit/sec.  
Also, WINEDEBUG=+winsock seems to be enough to get past the "Initializing
network" hang, don't need WINEDEBUG=+relay.
I'm now at 0.2% progress, w00t.
