I already thought about this, when you pinpoint that.

No at all. It happens under valgrind in all apps i tried. And everything
(except wine and kernel) comes pre-packaged by debians maintainers. Maybe
valgrinds runs them normally, but one don't know, because calling egrep&string
normally successed. I never saw such output in Lenny's time.
