Whatever checks are bypassed with the modified DLLs are not the real problem,
as I can get to the same point with the DLLs from a Windows XP installation. 
Unfortunately there is still a crash that occurs before the menu screen in both
cases, with the only apparent effect of the DLL replacement having been to
crash the application sooner.

I think Valve will need to address this; there is only so much that we can do /
have access to.
