So I feel this could be a very simple solution, and fixed in the near future. 
It is simply an issue of specifying a 'fixed-width' font.  And having it hard
coded into vanilla Wine (for now).  Where does Wine get it's fonts from?  And
does it (or can it) draw from the host system automatically?  The long-term
goal being: Able to set fonts from [winecfg] for certain window types as in a
full desktop environment.

I nominate FreeMono font for use.
