Indeed, something has changed in wine-1.3.34-295-g4918d91: instead of the black
screen, the game screen is displayed now, but only the upper left part of the
screen is shown. 
Here I'm attaching 2 screenshots to demonstrate how the game looks like now
with different resolutions. The screenshots were taken while the game was
running in virtual desktop mode, but the same happens with Wine's full-screen
mode too.

As far as I know no demo exists for Master of Orion 3.
