Just a note: this bug report was originally about the installation failure, but
seemingly you have problems when starting the already installed game (which is
indeed reproducible with the trial version of PvZ, available from Popcap).
According to Bugzilla's rules that should go into a separate bug report.

The installation went without issues here, tried with 1.2.3 and 1.3.35.
