Arguably, the demo's broken decoding of a DirectX version string from the
registry, which might not even be the sanctioned method in the first place, is
buggy. I feel that having compatibility knobs modeled on similar functionality
on Windows is perfectly fine, but you can't have changes in Wine that totally
contradict what Windows actually has/does.

That said, you're perfectly entitled to make whatever local changes you please
to your Wine prefix. I just don't think it makes sense to change the DirectX
registry version string in Wine contrary to what Windows ever had.
