chip challenge seem work normally if you are using "plug:dmix:0" and run a
softsynth for the background music 

timidity -iA -Os -o plug:dmix:0

so this is a regression because your linux distribution override alsa 's
default device by pulse and you cannot use the "default" device in
/usr/share/alsa/cards/HDA-Intel.conf for your HDA
