As suggested in bug 24299, installing vcrun2005 and corefonts through
winetricks appears to be a valid workaround for this bug. I already had
vcrun2005 installed, but I installed it again and I installed corefonts, and
SotIS now works perfectly (I just played^Wtested it for several hours).
