I am also having the same problem, even with running 
taskset -c 0 wine riftpatchlive.exe

I'm running wine-1.2.2
When I clcik play, it give a warning about directX being out of date and asks
if I want to update.  I say no, since it won't update in any case and I
installed 
 winetricks d3dx9
