I agree with you. I'd even argue that implementing the S3TC algorithms from
scratch is not a patent violation as long as you don't reverse-engineer. But
I'm not a patent expert, an nor are the wine devs, so as it stands this sort of
software decoder won't get into wine upstream.

I suggested it mainly because it'd be more likely to be accepted by AJ.
