Fixed it. 

>From Synaptic, I reinstalled:

fglrx-atieventsd 
fglrx-driver 
fglrx-glx 
fglrx-glx-ia32 
fglrx-module-dkms 
glx-alternative-fglrx 

only this time I opened the "Details" window and spotted the lines at the
bottom that said something like:

"driver installed but not yet configured, suggest you edit some file or other
(in etc/ I think).

trying sudo aticonfig --initial may work!

So I did: 

sudo aticonfig --initial

Nothing seemed to change but the game now runs. 

It's playable but the mouse cursor is very erratic and it is difficult to click
on the right place because it jumps around after you point at something. The
workaround described here:

doesn't seem to help.

BTW: The laptop now runs much cooler, the fan doesn't run full blast and the
battery life is about 1.5 time longer than it was before I installed and
configured the fglrx-driver.
