hl2/resource/ClientScheme.res

There you have a lot of options, for example:
"italic"    "1"

You can set it to 0. Also you can change font, disable antialiasing or do
anything other.

If you are playing Episode 1, you should edit:
episodic/resource/ClientScheme.res

Other games should have similar files.
