I was having (and still have) problems with this bug when playing Oblivion, but
the sound is less buggy in Skyrim. Getting the sound to work in the first place
was a challenge, but installing DirectX 10 and alternating between Windows XP
and Windows 7 emulation modes seemed to help. (That is: I'd set it for Win XP
emu mode, load the game, and if sound didn't work, I'd quit and re-load with
Win 7 emu selected. Neither one nor the other consistently performed better, so
I'm not sure what's at play there)
I have not tested Oblivion since installing DirectX 10 (installed via the
redist on the Skyrim disc), but will do that.
