It worked, the problem was solved by upgrading to version 1.5.8. There is still
no sound in Rise of Nations, but that is a known error (see bug 9027); I'll see
to running through that later. Sound aside, the game seems to be running; I'll
do further tests and see to posting an update on the RON page later.
