For anyone who's having weird graphical problems, I also had red stuff all over
my screen and crashes until I followed a workaround I found here:

sudo mv /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/keyboard.gnome-settings-plugin
/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/keyboard.gnome-settings-plugin.ori

sudo pkill -9 gnome-settings-daemon

This works around an apparent bug to do with the keybord, that causes high
consumption of CPU, and blinking keybaord lights (numlock in my case)...

NOTE: that applying this workaround will disable certain features related to
the keyboard as outlined in the bug post.

Also removing my directx winetricks dll overrides seems to have helped. :0\
