This is an issue for windows users as well.

The solution found was to install the following:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

The problem seems to be (from the thread) that newer directx versions are
missing some parts of 9.0c. I don't know if this is applicable to wine.

I tried to disable the d3d10 dll, but got the same error.
