I have the same problem as Gilboa, but on Ubuntu.

I believe I started to experience it when wine reworked it's sound system
around mmdevapi.

I've had problems with sound either stopped working altogether, or becoming
distorted and stayed that way until a reboot. The distorted sound only happens
in wine (winecfg sound test, World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2 as examples).
Outside of wine sound works perfectly.

The distorted sound has happened on:
Ubuntu 11.10 with wine 1.3.30+, alsa 1.0.24 and pulseaudio 1.0
Ubuntu 12.04 with wine 1.4, alsa 1.0.25 and pulseaudio 1.1

The distortion happens on both a Soundblaster Audigy and a Intel 82801I (ICH9
Family) HD Audio Controller.
