nvidia doesn't work out of the box... I have nvidia AND the issue :-(
Furthermore, unfortunately none of the workarounds suggested by you works with
my configuration (neither the pixel refresh trick) :-(
SketchUp 8 
wine 1.5.5
Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
NVidia GeForce 8600 GT

I hope that at least people with intel graphics card can enjoy your solution
