I am still around just don't have time to do anything useful actually.

The patch you are looking at is not the fix for the bug described here. It is
just a set of tests which would reveal a missing functionality. What this test
lacks is actually testing if https sites will work. That is - it tests if
certificates are fetched and tests that there are several certificates and that
they are kept in intermediate storage. It does not attempt to verify those
certificates.
