There are several workarounds mentioned in the comments, please read them.

IMO, easiest is to run winecfg, go to libraries, and mark dwrite as "native" or
"disabled"
Using steam.exe -disable-dwrite is also possible, but doesn't work when steam
relaunches automatically or through the URL shortcuts.
