Oh... how very insightful. Many thanks, I've learned a lot from this exercise

So Mathcad now starts up (hooray) and displays some basic windows. Then it
immediately freezes, and starts displaying the following line over and over in
the console:

fixme:mlang:fnIMLangLineBreakConsole_BreakLineW (0x361f760)->1024 L"Find out
what's new in Mathcad 14 under New Features." 53 -17197070 0xede79c 0xede768

the third number from the right (-17197070) decreases by 1 with each line.
There's really a lot of these printed out, and they get 6 of my cores above 50%
usage, so I killed it.

It looks like it's trying to display some sort of tip of the day (judging from
the string it fails to break line on) - I'll see if I can disable it.
