We press one key, e.g. the "ä". See
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/36/KB_Germany.svg/800px-KB_Germany.svg.png.

The combination you've given "Alt Gr + [ + a" doesn't work here. I get "[æ".
