  $ export force_s3tc_enable=true

This actually works for me too (tried it once and only for a few minutes - but
look promissing!)

Could this be a Mesa-realted problem (seems nvidia/ati are unaffected)?

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile 
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 8.0.2
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30


Can anyone confirm?

Why does this type of texture compression need to be enabled "manually"?
