Everything will work fine even on wine 1.4 if you uncheck "Allow the window
manager to control windows" option in wine preferences.

You should go to Wine / Configure Wine (or find Configure Wine in your
Unity/Gnome apps search panel) / go to the Graphics tab and uncheck all
checkboxes.

Start Heroes, now it should work fine!
