- static HUD does not cause crash - HUDs are often a special object type in
game engines
- Moving / temporary HUD does cause crash - is a 2D object, probably does not
use HUD classes
- Muzzle flash is maybe a 2D object

Is it possible that the crash is a problem rendering 2D game objects?  Can you
remind me of any non-"red" HUD overlays?  It's been a while :(
