I also just tested this again to confirm findings. 

Doesn't appear to be slowdowns anymore, Ubuntu 12.04, nvidia 319.49. Wine 1.6.1

Mirrors Edge on a new prefix will install physx 8 itself and yeah, this doesn't
appear to be an issue anymore.
