If anyone is having this issue in the latest wine (1.7.17) like I was, it seems
to be caused by Word failing to check for updates online. Word can be started
without crashing as long as you are offline.

To prevent crashing without needing to disconnect every time, I did the
following:
-Disconnect PRIOR TO FIRST TIME RUNNING WORD
-Run Word
-When the "Welcome to Microsoft Office 2010" dialogue appears, select "Don't
make changes"
-Close Word
-You should now be able to reconnect to the internet and start Word without it
crashing

If you have already run Word and it has crashed, you will need to do the
following (untested, but should work):
-Disconnect from the Internet
-Run Word
-Click File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options
-Deselect "Connect to Office.com for updated content when I'm connected to the
Internet."
-Deselect "Download a file periodically that helps determine system problems"
-Deselect "Sign up for the Customer Experience Improvement Program"
-Click Ok, Ok, then close Word
-You should now be able to reconnect to the internet and start Word without it
crashing
