[Bug 35783] Risk of Rain freezes randomly

Just an observation, but the patch from bug 35530 that significantly improves
framerate as observed in bug 35633 may be connected to this. While the game was
near unplayable prior to 1.7.14 due to low fps, I was able to use some of the
items that currently cause this crash.

If I can find a simple way to trigger this problem in the demo version, I'll
try a bisect, but since I am on 64-bit Ubuntu, I'm not too confident of the
results.
