OK, perhaps it has something to do with my configure invocation.

CFLAGS="$(CFLAGS)" ./configure --with-x --enable-opengl --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc \
--libdir=\$${prefix}/lib --mandir=\$${prefix}/share/man --infodir=\$${prefix}/share/info
