That probaly because your email client has automagically converted it for you.
If I look at the raw email I see;

Content-Type: application/x-pkcs7-mime;
smime-type=signed-data;
name="smime.p7m"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename="smime.p7m"

I have no idea how to read this. It's way too much effort so I'll just sent
it to /dev/null.
