Ubuntu likely to abandon HAL next cycle -- is this workable?

The distro position is that HAL has no upstream, is unmaintained, and
conflicts with udisks/upower to the point where stuff starts breaking
(eg, the battery monitor gets confused and reports you have 5% and 6
hours left)
