I remember a discussion a while ago, but why exactly do we need winegcc 
rather than plain mingw?

I remember one argument being that we might not know the CRT version 
linked to, but does this really matter in practice for any of our 
libraries? E.g. the ones I'm aware of ship their own malloc/free 
wrappers for memory they return.
