I'd suggest to add freetype and fontforge to the optional support
libraries

list in the README file and be done with this "regression".

I am all for this listing in README, however this one causes many hard
to explain problems. Until I read this thread I was perplexed by XIO: fatal IO error 14 that was
occurred without warning. The relationships between and the problems
caused by this issue may need more explaining to ensure that people
know why they need this package. Note Fedora seems to have freetype
but not fontforge in the base distribution which means this problem
will happen more often rather than less.

The other issue is whether there are other optional packages that need
listing.
