Hmm, looks like the PRELOAD trick doesn't work anymore. Anyway, how
about keeping the old
version of Wine just for connecting to the newsserver and using a
newer one in parallel
for everything else? Just an idea.

Also, if you compile from source anyway, how about explicitly
linking to the SOCKS libraries?
This helps in a few cases, I've been told. You might try Dante as
well (an alternate SOCKS client
and server). 

If all this doesn't help, try to find some documentation and add the
SOCKS5 support to WINE, or
pay someone to do it if you *really* need it :-). I'm certain quite
a few people would be thankful
for that, but the core wine developers are (I think) more interested
in getting the basic infrastructure in place.
