I don't see an obvious reason for the
problem, unfortunately.
However, there is a problem with the creation
of windows based on the Ms Richedit control.

Around the problem there is a call asking for
the characteristics of the system font.

Could you try to set an alias for the system
font
"Alias" = "System,<your favourite font>"  

I use on my Mandrake 8:

"Alias" = "System,-mdk-helvetica-"
