If that is rpm 3.0.3 you are using, (rpm --version), I think what it
wants is a newer version of rpm.  I think there is an rpm-3.0.5
and a popt to go with it available at http://www.rpm.org that rpm-3.0.3
can install that can handle the newer packages.  rpm-3.0.4 seems to have
slightly clearer (but still confusing) error messages.
