I personally find that the easiest thing to do is to not bother with the
FTP stuff. Instead, move or rename your old wine tree, and then execute:

cvs -z 3 checkout wine

This will obtain the entire current wine tree via CVS, which despite the
warnings takes about 3 minutes for me (over DSL). You should now be able
to do the configure, make depends, make thingys without a problem. If
you are only updating once every month and a half or so, as I am, I
don't think it is a big deal to just get a whole new wine tree each
time.
