Good free Web Graphics Progmans

I'm using PhotoImpact under Windows - I've just started to use wine and am 
still on notepad <G>.  I have version 6.0 and if that's basic I'd hate to 
see full <G>.  They used to have a smaller version that shipped with video 
cards which is what you might be thinking off!  However, I am trying to get 
off Windows and I've used gimp on a couple of small projects.  I found out 
from other users that they use it in conjuction with xfig so I'm still at 
the bottom of the learning curve.
