font display problem in Lotus Notes R5

I'm having a strange problem on a Debian woody box. All fonts look fine
when I use Notes R5 (input boxes, dialogs, menus etc), *but* in the text
fields (new memo body, or a new reminder body) all characters after the
first are invisible while typing. Hit ENTER, and all appear! The same
happens in each line.

I have installed the following Debian packages:
# dpkg --list | grep wine
ii libwine 0.0.20020411-1 Windows Emulator (Library)
ii libwine-dev 0.0.20020411-1 Windows Emulator (Development files)
ii wine 0.0.20020411-1 Windows Emulator (Binary Emulator)
ii wine-doc 0.0.20020411-1 Windows Emulator (Documentation)
ii wine-utils 0.0.20020411-1 Windows Emulator (Utilities)
ii winesetuptk 0.6.0b-1 Windows Emulator (Configuration and
#

The debugging output I'm getting in my terminal while running Lotus Notes
(which does not occur while I'm typing, though), is:
